Singapore Scrabble players are set to enter a new chapter of competitive play with the adoption of CSW24 (Collins Scrabble Words 2024) as the official word list for all WESPA-rated tournaments from 1 January 2025. This updated lexicon reflects the ever-evolving nature of the English language, bringing in a mix of modern slang, internet-born expressions, and fresh vocabulary from across cultures.

The CSW24 update introduces 1,814 new words, with 845 of them falling within the highly playable three-to-eight-letter range—prime territory for scoring bingos and slotting in high-value hooks. Among the more eye-catching additions are UWU and OWO, two emoticons-turned-words that have made the leap from online chats and fandoms to the Scrabble board. UWU conveys a sense of cuteness or affection, while OWO suggests surprise or curiosity. They join other contemporary entries such as FAV, NERF, YEET, EMPATH, and RESPAWN, showing how digital and gaming culture continues to influence even the most traditional of word games.

From 1 January onwards, every official Scrabble tournament in Singapore will be played under CSW24. This ensures uniformity with the global competitive scene, as all players will work from the same updated list, and also means that local players can seamlessly transition to international play without worrying about discrepancies in word validity.

The inclusion of words like UWU and OWO may seem playful, but they open up fresh strategic possibilities. Their short length and vowel-rich composition make them valuable tools for tight board positions, endgame manoeuvres, or making use of awkward racks. The update also rewards players who keep pace with contemporary language, as familiarity with newly valid words can create scoring opportunities that opponents might overlook.

With CSW24 in place, Singapore Scrabble is embracing a lexicon that is both globally relevant and culturally current. It marks a step forward for the game, balancing the heritage of classic wordplay with the vibrancy of modern expression, and setting the stage for a more dynamic and engaging competitive scene in the years ahead.
